More Revelations

Posted by: Jenn  :  Category: Writing

Today was one of those blah writing days.  I got the words down, but they didn’t mean much.  I certainly didn’t feel them and that affected the experience.  So, I took a break and did some reading in Trapped by Chris Jordan.  And it was during this time that I had my revelations.

1. I want to write my books with my heroines in first person and any other narrative in third.  I’ve been told by many authors to not do this.  It is hard to sell and frowned upon, I guess.

Well Trapped is yet another book done just this way.  And to top it off, Mr. Jordan’s protagonist is a woman who speaks in a rather conversational tone.  Which brings me to number

2. I assumed that my conversational way of writing meant I write light and semi-funny.  There are several laughs in my first attempt at chick lit, so it was a natural assumption.  But it doesn’t mean my writing is F-U-N-N-Y.  Which in another way doesn’t mean it has to be light, either.

What if my heroines just speak casual and informal, like I do with my friends, AND they find themselves in dark situations?  It won’t end up being as dark as I enjoy reading or love watching in tone, but the situations don’t have to be comical.

The second revelation is rather eye-opening and much easier to apply.  The first may be a problem.  Of course, I don’t want to not be able to sell, but writing in first and third has always been part of my plan.  I’m ready to alter that portion if need be, but I have to at least try my plan, right?

I don’t think I have a pure chick lit voice, so maybe I shouldn’t enter the contest.  I’ll make that decision after I edit my entry, which I just finished (the second one) today.  I will definitely be writing this book the way I want to.  No labels, no restrictions, no worries or concerns.  MY WAY! I just heard Frank Sinatra in my ear.
